Hi friends,

So I dropped Roman off for surgery yesterday at 8 am.  At noon I got the call that they were starting anesthesia and then a little after 2 pm the surgeon called to say that the surgery was over and had gone well.  What a relief! I know we have a challenging and exciting few months ahead of us but this, for me, was the scariest part and I am so grateful my little buddy made it through without any complications.  I was planning to wait to see him until he was a little more awake and his pain was more under control but then my friend Kristin, who also happens to be a vet tech at the hospital where Roman had his surgery, sent me this picture…

Look at that little champion!!  Sitting there like “no big deal, I got this.  Got any chicken?”  I am so proud.  Huge shout out to Kristin who made him an “extra comfy princess bed” and scared up a hot wheels pillow case for him.  After seeing how well he was doing I had to go see him.  So, at 10 pm I went out to visit with Roman.

Happy pup.  He was really high on pain meds but he is still my sweet, wonderful Roman.  He fell asleep with his head in my arms.  I love him so.

This is what the surgery site looks like about 8 hours after procedure.  Not bad!  There was a little bit of blood but I was assured that that is perfectly normal.  The blue plastic you can see at the back of the shaved area is a catheter they use to administer local numbing medicine.  He is also on IV pain meds and fluids.  There are staples and stitches holding the incision closed.

Is the graphic description really necessary Margaret?!? Yes. These are the things I wanted to know about going into this procedure and learning about it on this site helped me be confident and informed so I could focus my attention on Roman and his needs.  I hope this info helps another dog parent do the same thing.

My sweet Roman should be coming home from the vet tonight and I have prepared the house with mats and rugs so he wont slip.  I have made him lots of comfy places to rest in the house.  I got some puppy potty training pads to put down in case he has accidents and I am looking forward to more discharge instructions from the vet so I can do right by Roman.

He is such a rock star. I cannot wait to see my boy!

I am so grateful for all his wonderful vets, vet techs and our whole support community.

Just when I thought he couldn’t get any cuter!!

Cheers,

Margaret

Welcome to the Tripawd Nation Margaret and Roman! What a cutie he is 🙂 Looks like Roman is rockin’ like on three so far but, since you have read the FAQs I am sure you know that you might have some ups and downs in the recovery process. It is so great to read how much you have gotten from this site and that you want to pass it on. Your great attitude will help Roman’s recovery immensely.

We are looking forward to following Roman’s tripawd adventures!

YAAAAAAAAAY FOR ROMAN!!!! Such a wonderful update! YAAAAAAAAAY FOR MARGARET!! And it pays to have the vet tech as your friend…what a comfy set-up Roman has!

These pictures are blowing my mind! He looks really good! I know he’s drugged and I know he has some ups and downs coming his way, but it looks like he’s going to do just fine!!

Rest, potty, eat, drink and more rest.

Roman is such a cutie pie! There is nothing like spoiling a tripawd! It’s impossible not to! And who wouldn’t want to anyway??

Stay connected a d keep us updated, okay? Recovery for the first two weeks can be a little rough sometimes.

    Hugs to you both!

Thank you so much! Roman continues to do really well. I am tired but so happy that my boy is recovering nicely.
Your words of encouragement are so helpful.
